Barbara Bernstein Yoffee ('56) Reports

Currently, my husband and I carry on a small business buying and selling out-of-print and antiquarian children's books.

This note concerns Marcia Schonfeld, ... Class of '59. Marcia was the author and illustrator of a number of prize winning children's books, published first in Canada and then in the United States, under the name Dayal Kaur Khalsa. We are soon to observe the 15th anniversary of her death from breast cancer in July 1989. Much of her work reflected her childhood growing up in Forest Hills, and many of the illustrations in her books are accurate renderings of locations in her neighborhood (which was mine as well).

In 1999, in honor of the 10th anniversary of her death, The National Library and Archives of Canada, in Ottawa, where most of her original art work is preserved, did a retrospective exhibition of her works. In connection with this exhibition, I delivered a lecture with illustrations and personal photographs, the product of my continuing research on her life and works, as one of the Library's Savoir Faire Series.

Anyone who may have known her as a student might be interested in reading the paper and seeing its illustrations The full text and illustration may be found on the web site of the National Library of Canada, using the key words Dayal Kaur Khalsa and Barbara Yoffee. I would be happy to speak or correspond with anyone who knew or remembers her, and who can offer additional information about her life in Queens..
